Newsletter August 1989
Hello!
Those of you who were with us in March will be aware of the survey that one of our members, Pete Telford was conducting - with your help of course! Well, Pete sent me his results and they were interesting to say the least. (Please bear in mind that this survey was conducted before the release of either Still too young to remember or Eat me in St Louis.) Pete says every track released by It Bites (before May 1989) was mentioned except BIG LAD IN THE WINDMILL, HEARTBREAKER and WANNA SHOUT. The winning track was listed by over 50% of those participating (approximately 10% of the membership at that time).
Here are the favourite tracks of those taking part, which is probably a fair reflection of the majority of the membership. (or is it?):
- Once Around the world
- Old Man And The Angel
- Yellow Christian
- You'll Never Go To Heaven
- Kiss Like Judas
- Hunting The Whale
- Calling All The Heroes
- Rose Marie
- I Got You
- Plastic Dreamer
- Black December
- All In Red
- Screaming On The Beaches
- Midnight
- Castles
- Staring At The Whitewash
- Strange But True
- Whole New World
- Turn Me Loose
- Cold Tired And Hungry
Members were then asked to submit their top three other favourite bands or artists. Pete says that no less than 98 different bands and artists were mentioned, the majority of which were mentioned only once or twice. Therefore the list below represents those mentioned three or more times.
- Genesis
- Yes
- Then Jericho
- Duran Duran
- Marillion
- Beatles
- Breathe
- Kate Bush
- Peter Gabriel
- Rush
- Simple Minds
- Sting
- Wet Wet Wet
Although the response wasn't exactly overwhelming, Pete says he had lots of fun compliling his lists and that he recieved letters from all over Europe, U.S.A, Japan and even the South Atlantic!
I know Pete would like to Thank all of you who took part in his survey, and he hopes to hear from some of you again
Now I would like to thank Pete for all his efforts - well done! I dare say lots of you will be as surprised as I was by the results with regard to what else you listen to. Some favourites were quitre predicatable but certainly not all of them.
At some point in the future I hope Pete will oblige by compiling another up-dated list including the recent releases. That should prove interesting too!
Another one of our members, Robert Lewis from South Woodford, London has hit on the idea of having an It Bites Convention. We all think this is a great idea and are behind Robert wholeheartedly. I'll let Robert himself tell you of his plans.
My intention is to organise a gathering of members of the Appreciation Society , which hopefully will become an annual event, The convention will be held on a Sunday and will take place at a venue in London. It will consist of playing the bands music showing their videos on a large scrren (Meltdown etc) and prahaps a quiz (with prizes!). I will need your help with the loan of singles/videos etc which I may not have. Also, has anyone got a decent sound system to link up to the video for playing the records?
The main reason for the convention is to enable you to get together with others who share a common interest, to swap anecdotes, make new friends and help this great band make it to the top. I want this to be an occasion that involves everyone.
Please tell me if you have any ideas for the convention, maybe there are some bands among you who would like to play!
I need a reply from you immediatly to enable me to assess the level of interest. I can then calculate the costs and get the organising of the event underway. (Please only write if you are sure you will be coming, as the Number of replies will determine the size of the venue. I would appreciate the inclusion of a stamped addressed envelope)
The address to write to is below and all replies must be in by the end of August. I will let you know ,more details as soon after that as I have them. I look forward to hearing from you!
Thanks Robert! We all hope this convention idea takes off and wish Robert every success in his venture. We hope you all will support him.
Maggie
P.S. We have just heard today from Thames Television that the show recorded at the Town and Country Club on the recent Eat Me In St Louis Tour will be broadcast on September 28th. However as this information has only just been recieved, I suggest you check press to be sure.
