Bonjour mes amies!
Well, what can I say? First the album goes top 40, and then the tour just happens to be a complete success!
The first thing that I want to do is thank everyone for their support on the tour and also for the all the cards, letters and gifts we recieved during June. (Great phrase or what!)Directly after the last letter was sent to you, we recieved an invitation to visit Russia to play in a 15,000 capacity ice rink in Moscow. We accepted the offer resevedly and flew out, not quite knowing who or what to expect. Let me tell you that Moscow is a beautiful city. The people there made us most welcome, although walking around red square wearing a pair of ripped jeans displaying the American flag , a biker jacket and no socks did tend to raise a few eyebrows among the locals!
It's a strange place for a westerner to visit because a great majority of the things we take for granted ie, fresh meat and veg, pubs, fashion, leather shoes are simply not readily available. Instead they have miles of queues, and crows with bits of white on, basically the sort of thing we would find unacceptable here.
From the outside the architecture looks stunning although on entering the buildings you are greeted by a musky darkness reminisent of some scenes in the film BLADERUNNER. Anyway the gig was brilliant and later, at the press conference we were presented with a certificate to say that they voted us to be the best band ever to visit the U.S.S.R and we have been invited to return for a gig on New Years Eve. We told them if they let us take back a few crows with white on we'd do it, but I can't see them doing that! Seriously though, it was a wonderful experience, and one which we would not hesitate to repeat. The next thing I suppose I should mention is the lack of airplay given to STILL TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER. Bundles of people approached me and asked me why. The answer is simply that I don't know. We really though that we had recorded a major hit, and the vibe was very optimistic before the release. However, on hearing that no-one at Radio One liked it even a tiny bit, we soon figured that we were wrong. But judging by the reaction from your letters and the viocal feedback on tour, it seems that you guys liked it and to be quite honmest I respect your opinion a great deal more than I do that of the present Radio One set up, with the exeption of Mike read who does buy our albums. Maybe if we changed our names by dead poll to Kylie Dunnery, Dick Astley, Sinitta Beck and the Reynolds Dalton, we could squeeze a few more plays from them - and who's to say we won't"
I feel like writing a poem, so here goes:They all blamed me.
"Incredible", I thought, Truths access so wrough.Surely a widespread emotion
Delivering concept to nations abortion
Then how can it be
When the truths down to me
That they all realised I was the devious bastard
Who subjugated thine essence
Hit you over the back of the head with a hammer
And whistled as I buried you at the bottom of someone elses garden.
Amen© Francis Dunnery 1989 - Dedicated to the Appreciation Society.
There now, that's better! A couple of days ago we released the second single from EAT ME IN ST LOUIS album. The A side is Sister Sarah and the 7" has BULLET IN THE BARRELL on the B-side. The 12" has these two tracks and WOMAN IS AN ADDICT, and there is a 3" compact disc available which contains all of these plus the original version of HEARTBREAKER. Let's hope this one does a little better for us!
Over the years, countless people have asked us to list our favourite albums you know- the stuff we listen to. Over the next few issues Dick, JOhn and Bob will list thewir choices, but as I'm writing this letter I get first go! This is my selection:
