TAB Key

h - hammer on

p - pulloff

/ - slide up

U - upstroke

D - downstroke

() - incidental note

X - mute with palm of picking hand

[xT] - play indicated phrase 'T' times

rake - exagerate the strumming of the chord

(but not enough for it to be an arpeggio)

Tuning Notes

The tuning was extracted using the Intro figure, and confirmed in other parts of the song.

Starting with the guitar in standard tuning:

E A D G B E (low to high)

and altering the tuning as follows .....

Listening to the Intro. The 2 highest notes, which ring throughout, sound as open strings. These notes are 'B' and 'D', and gives us:

? ? ? ? B D

The first 2 (lowest) notes of the common picked pattern are doubled G notes. Tuning the A-string down to G would make this possible to play, giving:

? G ? ? B D

The other G can be played on the E-string-3rd fret, although at the moment its tuning isn't clear.

The descending run in bar 4, contains open strings. An open D-string can be heard. The highest note picked is an 'A' - this also sounds as an open note, implying the standard G-string needs to be tuned to an open A, giving: *

? G D A B D

* Make sure you were originally tuned to standard 'E' (as found on a guitar tuner) or lower, before attempting this. Otherwise the G-string is put under stress and can break.

The only unknown string is the bottom E-string, which is left tuned to E - allowing the doubled G note to be played on the 3rd fret.

In verse 1 bar 8, there is an ascending pattern which uses the lowest 3 strings in open positions. An open low E can be heard, confirming the tuning to be:

E G D A B D (from low to high)

Playing Notes

The Intro and Verses 1 and 2 are in 4/4 time. The choruses, verse 3 and guitar solos are in 2/4 time. Thanks to Mandy for the thoughts on timing. (mandy@electronic.co.uk)

Verses 1 and 2 are based on the picking pattern used in the Intro. Let all notes ring, particularly those on the D and B strings. Verse 3 uses the same shape as a chorus.

In the chorus' spend time getting the feel of 2/4 time. Also, make sure the guitar is in tune - a few D's played in unison can sound unforgiving if it isn't up to scratch. The chorus' sound 'jangley', its possible that they were either doubletracked, played with a chorus effect or that a 12-string guitar was used. Chorus 2 has a mandolin mixed in with the guitar, which in turn gives it a brighter sound.

Both solos are similar and have a Spanish/flamenco feel. The solos contain some fast note flurries and wide interval steps, requiring some fretboard fluency. The rhythm tracks behind both solos use the same shape as a chorus, but the note choices are more uniform.
